SAN JOSE — November 2, 2026. The City of San José directs households to Santa Clara County’s free hazardous-waste collection program for items that cannot safely be placed in ordinary bins.

Materials handled separately

The city names household batteries, paints, cleaning chemicals, oil and propane tanks as examples of material requiring special handling. Accepted items and packaging rules depend on the receiving facility.

The Environmental Innovation Center

San José identifies a permanent county household hazardous-waste facility at its Environmental Innovation Center, 1608 Las Plumas Avenue. The city advises making an appointment online through HHW.org or by calling 408-299-7300.

Never leave waste outside

The city warns that dropping waste at a locked facility is illegal dumping and can create exposure hazards. Residents should confirm eligibility, the appointment time and quantity restrictions before loading their vehicle.
