SAN JOSE — November 2, 2026. San José’s residential recycling guide explains that its household garbage is processed through a mixed-waste recovery facility where organic material can be separated for composting.

How the city’s system differs

Unlike municipalities using a dedicated food-scrap cart, San José says food scraps from the household garbage stream are recovered at a processing facility. Yard trimmings follow separate collection and other service rules.

What remains important to sort

Recyclable bottles, cans and accepted paper still belong in the proper recycling stream, while batteries, paint and other household hazardous waste need approved special disposal. The presence of an organics recovery facility does not make all waste safe for ordinary trash.

How to check collection specifics

Residents can use the city residential services lookup or San José 311 to confirm their provider, collection day, replacement carts and local materials guide. Inconsistent sorting can contaminate recycling and increase disposal costs.
